The Crankshaft Position sensor (CKP) sensor:

is a variable reluctance sensor.
^
is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel mounted on the crankshaft.
^
provides base timing and Crankshaft Speed (rpm) to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
