Affected Vehicles
1997 Explorers built at the St. Louis and Louisville Assembly Plants from July 29, 1996 through February 15, 1997 equipped with 4.0L SOHC engines.
Reason For This Program
The oil pump drive assembly shaft in the oil pump drive assembly may seize as a result of inadequate lubrication. If the shaft should seize it could cause
a change in engine cam timing and result in damage to pistons, valves and head assemblies.
NOTE:
Based on warranty projections it is anticipated that less than 100 engine assemblies will require replacement under this program. Please follow the
diagnostic procedure exactly to determine proper service action.
Service Action
Affected owners are notified to return their Explorers for replacement of the oil pump drive assembly. Dealers are instructed to inspect the oil pump
drive for orientation in the engine. This inspection may reveal that the engine will require replacement. Refer to Attachment III inspection instructions.
Refunds
Only for owner-paid repairs made before the date of the Owner Letter (or after the date of the Owner Letter if an emergency repair was made away from
the servicing dealer).
