Brakes - Brakes Drag When They Are Hot

ISSUE
Some 2006 Explorer 4dr/Mountaineer vehicles may experience a brake drag condition. Customers may notice an odor, reduced powertrain performance
or that the vehicles transmission may not shift into higher gear. Once the brakes have cooled off, the condition may not exhibit itself again until the
brakes are reheated.
ACTION
Refer to the Service Procedure for additional diagnostic information.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Does the operator drive with the Adjustable Pedals in the full rear/up position?
a.
Yes - Go to Step 2.
b.
No - Go to Step 4.
2.
Check if the brake pedal contacts the 14401 harness which is tie strapped to the instrument panel brace directly above the brake pedal.
a.
Yes - Cut the tie strap and reposition the wire harness inboard so that it does not contact the pedal in the full rear position and install a new
zip tie (Figure 1).
b.
No - Go to Step 3.
3.
Ensure there are no other wire harnesses or connectors which would interfere with the brake pedal and/or switches.
a.
Yes - Reposition the wire harness so that harness does not interfere with the pedal/switches.
b.
No - Go to Step 4.
4.
Monitor the ABS module Booster Brake Pedal Force SW_NO PID (NGS PID PDFCENO; WDS/IDS/PDS PID BSTRBP-FSNO). This PID
should read CLOSED when the brake is not applied and should change to OPEN when slight brake pressure is applied. Is the system operating
normally?
a.
Yes - Go to Step 6.
