INSTALLATION

2.

Remove right hand frame extension to frame stud plate (A) and nuts (B), see figure 1. Discard stud plate and nuts.

3.

Remove bottom outboard carriage bolt (C) and nut (D). Discard bolt and nut.

4.

Install right hand outer arm bracket from kit and secure loosely to the bumper with carriage bolt (E), nut and washer (F), see figure 2.

5.

Install two bolts (G) from kit through outer arm bracket and frame extension and frame. Align bumper. Torque two nuts (H) to 100-136 N-m
(74-100 Ft.lbs.).

6.

Torque nut and washer (F) from kit on outer arm to bumper to 108-122 N-m (80-90 Ft.lbs.).

7.

Repeat steps 2 through 6 for left hand side using left hand outer bracket.

Ford Motor Company has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1991 Explorer trucks.

Safety Defect

The rear bumper reinforcement may crack
when towing a trailer using a bumper-mounted hitch ball.

Problems

If a trailer is being towed by means of
bumper-mounted hitch ball, a bumper with a cracked reinforcement could eventually detach from the vehicle.

Use of bumper mounted ball for trailer towing is not recommended until this service has been completed.
