SUBJECT:
Safety Recall 91S27 Supplement # 1 - Certain 1991 Explorer Rear Bumpers (Modification to the original recall to include units with aftermarket frame
-mounted trailer hitch receivers)
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1991 Explorers built from Job # 1 through January 23, 1991 including units equipped with an aftermarket frame-mounted trailer hitch receiver.
NOTE:
This action covers vehicles which were not returned for 91S27 and units which were returned but could not be completed because the vehicle was
equipped with a frame-mounted trailer hitch receiver.
REASONS FOR RECALL
Ford sent recall notices in March, 1991 to owners of Explorers advising them that "towing a trailer with a ball-type rear bumper hitch could result in
cracks to the bumper or the bumper mounting parts". At that time, we asked owners to return their vehicles to their dealers to have a rear bumper
reinforcement kit installed.
In a separate owner post card (stick-on Owner Guide announcement) we advised owners using aftermarket frame-mounted trailer hitch receivers that
Recall 91S27 could not be fitted to their Explorers.
ACTION
This Safety Recall advises owners that the recall service can now also be fitted to explorers with aftermarket frame-mounted trailer hitch receivers
installed, with the conditions listed below, and asks dealers to remove the stick-on Owner Guide announcement.
-
Explorers having certain aftermarket Class II frame-mounted trailer hitch receivers may have an interference condition between the receiver and the
recall bumper reinforcement brackets. If after loosening and repositioning the aftermarket receiver, the interference condition still exists, the Owner
Letter advises owners that we will, with their permission, replace their aftermarket Class II trailer hitch receiver with the Ford aftermarket Class II
hitch receiver and install the bumper reinforcement brackets.
-
Certain Class II, III, and IV aftermarket trailer hitch receivers may also require minor repositioning of the receiver to allow installation of the recall
reinforcement brackets.
-
Installation/repositioning will be made at no cost to owners.
-
In all cases, the recall service rear bumper outer arm brackets are to be installed in all affected Explorers brought to dealers for this service.
