Removal and Installation

NOTICE: While repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of foreign material or failure of the power
steering components may result.
1. NOTICE: Do not allow the steering column to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring may
result. If there is evidence that the lower shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information,
refer to Air Bag Systems.
NOTE: Use a steering wheel holding device (such as Hunter(R) 28-75-1 or equivalent).
Using a suitable holding device, hold the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
2. Remove the front tires and wheels.
3. If equipped, remove the 2 bolts, pin-type retainer and the oil shield.

To install, tighten to 15 Nm (133 lb-in).
4. Remove and discard the lower steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt.

To install, tighten the new bolt to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
5. Disconnect the lower steering column shaft from the steering gear.
