Removal and Installation
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the lower shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can
result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer
to Air Bag Systems.
Place the steering wheel and the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove the key.
3. Remove and discard the lower steering column shaft-to-steering column shaft bolt.

To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.)
4. Remove and discard the lower steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt.

To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.)
5. Remove the lower steering column shaft.
6. Inspect the lower steering column shaft for boot damage or separation from the shaft tube.

If damage or separation of the lower steering column shaft is evident, install a new lower steering column shaft.
7. CAUTION: New steering column shaft bolts must be installed.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
