A one-piece rear main seal was incorporated in the 5.0L engine starting with engine build date December 1, 1982 and in the 3.8L engine starting with
engine build date January 1, 1983. It is the same seal currently used in the 2.3L engine.

Removal and installation procedures are outlined in Section 21-05-17 of the 1983 Car Shop Manual D.

NOTE:

The new one-piece rear main seal cannot be used on previous 5.0L and 3.8L engines that were built with the two-piece seal.
