The subject concerns could be caused by an inoperative intake manifold heat control valve. The control valve butterfly plate may have become loose or
detached from its shaft. The butterfly plate may then be lodged in the EGR valve causing a rough idle or it may have entered a cylinder, causing a
knocking noise.
For servicing such a condition, the following procedure is recommended:
1.
Perform routine diagnostics for the concerns mentioned above. If, during inspection of any engine components (i.e., EGR valve, intake manifold),
the presence of foreign material is found or, if the concern cannot be diagnosed, proceed to Step # 2.
2.
Remove the intake manifold heat control valve assembly, following procedure in Section 21-21-19 of the 1983 Truck Shop Manual.
NOTE:
It is not necessary to remove carburetor.
3.
If the heat control valve is found inoperative or damaged, replace with the latest level valve, (Engineering Part No. E3TE-9G464-F1C or Part No.
E3TE-9G464-F1B with a date code of 3D18A or later and a white dot color code. Do not use valves that have prior date codes. The latest level
valve can be identified by two welds holding the butterfly to the shaft.
