Steering Shaft: Service and Repair
Steering Column Shaft
Removal and Installation
CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If
there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered.
1. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

Remove the key.
2. Remove the steering column opening trim and cover.
3. Remove the 2 steering column shaft dash seal bolts.

To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
4. Remove the bolt and separate the intermediate steering column shaft from the lower steering column shaft.

To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
5. Remove the dash boot bearing.
6. Separate the steering column assembly from the intermediate steering column shaft.
7. Remove the lower steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt and the lower steering column shaft.

To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
8. Separate the lower steering column shaft from the intermediate steering column shaft and the steering gear, and remove the shaft.
9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
