passages and oil pan before installing the new gasket. Use care when removing so that contamination does not enter the engine.

Hand scrape the old front cover gasket to remove heavy material before using the Roloc(TM) Bristle Disk to finish cleaning the gasket surfaces.
NOTE:
Roloc(TM) Bristle Disks are only authorized for use on the 3.8L and 4.2L front cover gaskets at this time. The 99B29 video says all, "Ford metal
engine surfaces"; this has changed.

To prevent coolant from draining down the front of the block, remove coolant from the water pump passages in the block with a hydrometer or
"turkey baster". This will allow the front of the block to be cleaned and dried for gasket installation.
6.
The proper seal installation tools (T94P-6701-AH, T88T-6701-A1, and T82L-6316-A) must be used on the front crankshaft seal. Oil leaks and
contamination will result if the proper tools are not used.
7.
Wait to drain the engine oil until after the front cover is installed. DO NOT use solvent to wash debris into the oil pan or wash out the oil pan with
the pan still on the vehicle. Solvent and debris will not drain completely out of the oil pan even with the drain plug removed. Any solvent and
debris left in the pan will contaminate the engine oil.
8.
Fill the new oil filter with clean engine oil and prime the lubrication system by cranking the engine with the coil disconnected for 15 seconds or
until the oil light turns off or the gauge registers pressure.
Inspection
1.
Check the oil for coolant contamination on the dipstick & oil filler cap.

If contamination is found, determine the source of the leak. Pressurize the cooling system and look for leaks into the cylinders (intake or head
gaskets), or into the oil pan (intake, front cover, or head gasket). Look carefully at the front cover gasket to see if it is leaking.

If coolant is found in the oil and there is no engine noise, perform 99B29 repairs. Then pressurize the cooling system after the repair to make sure
that all leaks are eliminated.

Listen to the engine to determine if it is knocking. Do not attempt engine repairs under 99B29. Ford Quality Renewal (FQR) engine replacement is
the only authorized repair if there is a connecting rod or main bearing knock. If an engine needs replacement, DO NOT replace the front cover
gasket. Prior approval from the Recall Hotline, 800-325-5621 is required for FQR engine replacement.
3.
If the engine is dirty, clean the front of the engine before removing the front cover.
Front Cover Removal
1.
Install memory saver then disconnect the battery negative cable.
2.
Raise and support the vehicle.
3.
Completely drain the radiator of coolant. Do not drain the engine oil at this time.
4.
Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector. Route the wiring to the front of the engine.
5.
Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
6.
Disconnect the oil pressure sender electrical connector.
7.
Lower the vehicle.
8.
Remove the jack handle.
9.
Remove the front air deflector.
10.
Remove the upper radiator hose.
11.
Remove the engine cooling fan and the fan shroud.
12.
Remove the drive belt.
13.
Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
14.
Detach the engine wiring harness pushpin from the water outlet tube flange.
