Backing Plate: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove the wheel and brake drum. Disconnect the brake tube from the wheel cylinder and plug the end of the brake tube to prevent air from

entering the system.

2. Remove brake linings and wheel cylinder.

3. Disconnect the parking brake lever from the cable. Remove the cable from the backing plate.

4. Remove the brake backing plate after the axle shaft has been removed.

INSTALLATION

1. Position the brake backing plate on the retaining bolts on the axle housing flange.

2. Install the parking brake cable from the backing plate. Connect the parking brake lever to the cable. 

3. Install the wheel cylinder and brake linings.

4. Connect the brake tube to the wheel cylinder and remove the air from the system by brake bleeding.
