ISSUE:
An engine stall condition may occur on some 1997 California F-Series 7.3L Diesel E4OD vehicles after a long decel when using M1 gear for engine
braking. When upshifting after the decel, the engine may stall if it is at approximately 1000 rpms (10 mph). This may be caused by the Powertrain
Control Module (PCM) calibration.
ACTION:
Reprogram the PCM. The revised calibration modifies the fuel control governor to reduce the possibility of stall. Refer to the following Service
Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Perform normal diagnostics as outlined in the 1997 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) Service
Manual and service as required.
2.
If the concern still exists, reprogram the PCM using the latest level CD-ROM and Service Bay Diagnostic System (SBDS) or New Generation Star
(NGS) Tester. Refer to the following PCM Calibration Reference Chart for the correct calibration.
NOTE:
PCM REPLACEMENT IS NOT AUTHORIZED BY THIS TSB. REFER TO THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSIONS DIAGNOSIS
(PC/ED) SERVICE MANUAL FOR APPROPRIATE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES IF PCM HARDWARE CONCERNS EXIST.
