Front Drive Axle - Dana 44 New Wheel Bearing Locknuts

AXLE - FRONT DRIVE (DANA 44) - NEW WHEEL BEARING LOCKNUTS
LIGHT TRUCK 1985 BRONCO, F150/250 (4x4)
Beginning July 1, 1985, a one-piece spindle bearing locknut will be used on the subject vehicles. These new parts will require revising the removal and
installation procedure as shown in Section 11-12 of the Shop Manual. The new procedure is as follows:
Removal
Remove manual hub lock in accordance with current procedures. New spanner wrench tool (PN P84-171-2) with longer tangs is required for removal
and installation of locknut assembly. Remove new one-piece bearing locknut by inserting the spanner wrench tangs into the four slots on the nut
assembly. Apply inward pressure to unlock the bearing nut locking splines and turn counter-clockwise to loosen the nut.
Installation
Thread the new one-piece locknut onto the spindle with the metal stamping inboard. Insure that the I.D. key on the stamping enters the spindle keyway.
Insert the spanner wrench tangs into the four slots on the locknut assembly. Apply inward pressure to unlock the bearing nut locking splines and turn
clockwise to tighten the nut.Tighten to 5O-60 ft.lbs. to seat the wheelbearings and then back off approximately 180~. Retighten the locknut to a final
torque of 15 ft.lbs.
NOTE:
New spindles have been released with a wider keyway. The one-piece locknut can only be used with the new spindles. Prior design level
locknuts will continue to be available for servicing the old spindles.
