Vacuum Brake Booster: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The power brake booster (2005) serves to increase, through vacuum assist, the effective foot pressure on the brake pedal (2455).
DESCRIPTION
A vacuum-type power brake booster is a container whose inner space is divided by a diaphragm into two separate chambers. The brake
pedal-to-power brake booster push rod enters on one side, and the brake master cylinder push rod exits on the other.
^
The brakes can also be applied manually if the vacuum system fails.
NOTE: The only serviceable components of the power brake booster are the booster check valve, the adjustable push rod and the rubber check
valve grommet.
A pump provides power to the power brake booster on diesel engines, which have no manifold vacuum.
NOTE: For a more detailed look at the operation of the brake booster and system, refer to fundamentals and basics.
