Steering Shaft: Service and Repair
Steering Column Shaft
NOTE: F350/450 shown, F450/550 similar.
Removal and Installation
1. Starting with the front wheels in the straight-ahead position, rotate the steering wheel 180 degrees.
2. Remove and discard the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt.

To install, tighten to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
3. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring
can result. If there is evidence that the steering column shaft has rotated the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional
information, refer to Air Bag Systems.
Rotate the steering wheel until the front wheels are back to the straight ahead position.

Remove the ignition key.

Disconnect the upper steering column shaft from the steering column.
4. Remove and discard the upper steering column shaft-to-lower steering column shaft bolt.

To install, tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
5. From the passenger compartment, remove the upper steering column shaft.
6. Separate the steering gear shield from the steering gear housing.
