ISSUE
Hard shifting may be evident when vehicle is cold or shift lever may be broken/bent. This may be due to insufficient venting of fluid in transmission
shifter detent assembly causing hydrostatic locking.
ACTION
Replace detent assembly and guide bushing with new detent assembly and revised guide bushing.
Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
For "Hard to Shift" Concern
1.
Raise vehicle on hoist.
2.
Remove guide bushing and detent with 1-5/8" socket. Refer to Figure 1.
3.
Install new Gear Shift Detent (E7TZ-7E218-A) into the new Guide Bushing (FB1Z-7Z415-AB).
4.
Apply Gasket Maker (F8AZ-19B508-AB or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G348-A5) on the threads of the bushing and install
into the transmission. Torque to 60-70 N.m (45-50 lb-ft).
For "Broken/Bent Shift Lever" Concern
1.
Follow "Hard to Shift" procedure to install new guide bushing.
2.
Follow procedure as outlined in the 1999 Super Duty F Series Workshop Manual to repair the broken or bent shift lever.
