Occasionally, field reports indicate a "black oily substance" within the engine coolant and is usually first noticed in the coolant recovery reservoir. In
some cases, engines have been disassembled unnecessarily to service an engine oil leak.
Engines are hot tested at the engine plant after the engine is assembled. The oily substance is the result of an excess amount of soluble oil in the hot test
stand coolant and/or excess residual coolant in the engine after hot test. The oily substance does not have any adverse effect on the engine coolant.
Internal engine leakage into the cooling system occurs very rarely and is evident by significant lowering of the engine oil level within the oil pan and
constant overflowing of the coolant at the reservoir.
