CLUTCH SYSTEM MALFUNCTION - 6.9L/7.5L -IMPROPER PARTS SUBSTITUTION
LIGHT TRUCK 1983-86 F-250/350
Attempts to improve clutch system performance/durability using Ford parts not designed for the system or "will fit" aftermarket parts can create greater
durability/performance concerns. Examples of these issues are:
Release Bearings
^
Bearings may not have a self-aligning feature.
^
Bearing grease may have lower temperature grease properties.
^
Anti-rotation bosses may not prevent rotation of the complete bearing assembly in the original equipment release lever fork.
Pressure Plate
^
Pressure plates may not have sufficient clamp load to accommodate high torque requirements of the 6.9L (D) and 7.5L engines, even though the
part may measure as a "larger clutch".
^
Geometric lift/stroke requirements of pressure plates may not be compatible with the design of the Ford vehicle system.
Disc
^
Friction properties of discs may not be sufficient for torque requirements of the 6.9L (D) and 7.5L engines.
^
Disc thickness may not be compatible to the Ford system.
^
Disc tuning may not be developed for the 6.9L diesel or 7.5L gasoline engine. This can result in transmission gear rattle (growl).
If the clutch system is experiencing performance/durability concerns, improper parts should be identified and removed. Concerns with systems having
proper pans should be serviced in accordance with TSB 86-20-10.
