Ticking-tapping-ratcheting noise occurring during vehicle deceleration may be caused by partial engagement of the reverse idler gear (7241) due to a
warped reverse shifter arm (7243).

To correct this condition, the following procedure is suggested:

1.

Road test the vehicle to verify reported sounds by driving the vehicle at a road speed of 45-55 MPH. Accelerate and then decelerate the vehicle
with the transmission in high gear. The noise will be more noticeable during the deceleration mode because of the reverse torque of the
transmission gear train rotation. If verified, continue with service actions referring to Figure #4, Page 16- 24-5 of the 1984 Shop Manual for
specific identification.

2.

Remove the gear shift housing from the transmission. This can be done without removing the transmission from the vehicle by removing the
transmission access floor plate.

3.

Remove the reverse gear shift arm (7243) and shift shoe/fork (7409) assembly from the inside of the transmission.

Inspect the reverse idler gear (7141) for indication of damaged teeth (nicks, chipped or broken teeth, evidence of gear raking). Refer to Figure 22.
Also inspect the reverse gear (78142) for indication of similar gear tooth damage.

5.

Install a new reverse shifter arm assembly (shifter #7243, shift shoe/fork #7409) to the transmission case.

6.

Install the transmission gear shift housing assembly to the transmission and install the transmission assembly into the vehicle as outlined in Section
16-24 of the Shop Manual.

7.

Install the required amount of ESP-M2C83-C Transmission Gear Lubricant.
