Mainshaft: Adjustments
NOTE: Measurement and adjustment of tapered roller bearing is necessary is a housing, countershaft, mainshaft, or input shaft has been replaced, or if a
tapered roller bearing has been replaced. The mainshaft, input shaft, and countershaft should be adjusted to provide a 0.00079-0.00434 inch preload.
After adjusting the two shafts, each should be rotated a few times to center the rollers on bearings.
ADJUSTMENT
1. After measuring tapered roller bearing preload measurements, place transmission in upright position, input shaft facing downward.
2. Drive two dowel pins out of their holes in front and rear cases, then lift front case from rear case.
3. Using a suitable slide hammer and puller, remove countershaft and mainshaft tapered roller bearing outer races from case.
4. Fit each race with shim washer or shim washer and shaft seal to obtain required preload previously determined.
5. Countershaft preload is established by using shims alone.
6. Input shaft and mainshaft preload is established by using shims and a baffle.
7. Install components beneath outer race or tapered roller bearing which seats in front case.
8. Apply a suitable sealant to mating surfaces of front and rear cases. Do not use silicone.
9. Position front case on rear case, then install all attaching screws and torque to 16 ft lbs.
