FLUID COOLER - SERVICE TIP

1999 SUPER DUTY F SERIES
ISSUE
After overhaul or exchange of a 4R100 transmission, replace the Oil-To-Air (OTA) Transmission Fluid Cooler. DO NOT try to flush or reuse the OTA
cooler.
ACTION
Follow the service procedure as outlined in the 1999 Super Duty F-Series Workshop Manual. Replace the OTA transmission fluid cooler after an
overhaul or transmission exchange. Flush and backflush the in-tank cooler (5.4L only), cooler lines, and cooler bypass valve.
All 1999 Super Duty F-Series 250/350/450/550 equipped with a 5.4L, 6.8L, or 7.3L engine now use a newly designed OTA transmission fluid cooler.
The 5.4L engine also uses a radiator in-tank transmission fluid cooler along with the new OTA cooler. The 6.8L and 7.3L applications use the OTA as a
stand alone transmission fluid cooler. The 1999 Super Duty F-Series Workshop Manual states, "Do not try to backflush the OTA transmission fluid
cooler. The internal design of the OTA cooler is such that it cannot be adequately flushed and must be replaced after an overhaul or transmission
exchange." For 5.4L Super Duty F-Series applications, the in-tank cooler is still used with the OTA cooler and must be flushed and backflushed along
with replacement of the OTA cooler. Failure to replace the OTA cooler and/or flush and backflush the in-tank cooler (5.4L only), cooler lines and cooler
bypass valve may cause repeat repairs and/or internal transmission damage Refer to the Workshop Manual for specific details on OTA transmission fluid
cooler replacement.
