Removal and Installation
CAUTION: While repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or failure of the power
steering components may result.
CAUTION: The steering gear bolts must not be reused. The threads of the bolts are coated with a dry adhesive. When the bolts are removed,
the dry adhesive is degraded. If the bolts are reused, failure of the bolts and/or steering gear may occur.
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Place the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.

Remove the ignition key.
3. Remove the fender splash shield.
4. Disconnect and position aside the ABS module electrical connector.
5. Disconnect the steering gear coupling shield from the line fitting and slide the shield upward on the intermediate shaft.
6. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring
can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information,
refer to Air Bag Systems.
Remove the lower steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt.

Disconnect the lower steering column shaft from the steering gear.

To install, tighten to 48 Nm (36 ft. lbs.).
7. Disconnect the pressure line-to-steering gear fitting.

Discard the O-ring seal.

To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
