Vacuum Regulator Valve: Customer Interest

TRANSMISSION - C6 - HARSH 1-2 AND 2-3 SHIFTS/DELAYED UPSHIFTS - VEHICLES WITH 6.9L AND 7.3L DIESEL ENGINES

ISSUE:
Harsh 1-2 and 2-3 shifts or delayed upshifts may be caused by new engine friction, a cold engine or damaged, loose or misrouted vacuum
lines to the vacuum regulator valve (VRV) or to the vacuum diaphragm assembly. Other possible causes could be a damaged or failed
vacuum diaphragm assembly or the VRV adjustment being out of specification.

Transmission vacuum below specification at the VRV results in harsh/delayed shifts.
^
Transmission vacuum higher than specification can result in shift slippage and/or clutch damage.
ACTION:
Check for damaged, loose or misrouted vacuum lines to the VRV or vacuum diaphragm. Replace or repair and reroute the vacuum lines as
required. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
Vehicles generally require about 3,000 miles (4,800 km) use for break-in. When the engine temperature is low, the transmission has to shift several times
before shift-feel improves. If the harsh/delayed upshifts continue, proceed as follows:

Replace the vacuum diaphragm assembly (D70Z-7A377-A) if it will not hold vacuum.

Check the condition of the vacuum lines. Replace or repair all damaged/affected vacuum lines.

Confirm that the top vacuum line to the VRV is from the vehicle's vacuum source and the bottom vacuum line connects to the transmission
vacuum tube.

Using the VRV positioning gauge block tool, verify and, if necessary, adjust the vacuum regulator valve to specification. Refer to the appropriate
model year service manual for performing this adjustment.
You may wish to replace the VRV phillip head screws with hex head bolts (58602-S2). This will allow for easier removal if future service becomes
necessary. Reuse the existing washers or replace them (E3TZ-9P631-A) when installing the new hex head bolts.
