Shift blockage or hard shifting into or out of gear may be caused by incomplete clutch disengagement. Incomplete disengagement may result from a
binding condition between the transmission input shaft splines and the splines of the clutch disc hub. As a result, complete release of the clutch disc from
the flywheel does not occur even though the clutch pedal is fully depressed. It is suggested that the following diagnosis procedure be used:
1.
Road test the vehicle to verify transmission shift blockage or excessive shift efforts.
2.
With engine running and vehicle not moving, again check for shift blockage or excessive shift efforts to verify condition.
3.
Remove transmission as outlined in Section 16-24 of the 1983-84 Light Truck Shop Manual.
4.
Remove the clutch housing, pressure plate assembly and clutch disc as outlined in Section 16-24 of the 1983-84 Light Truck Shop Manual. Verify
original installation of the "Alma" designed clutch disc (6 damper springs); Engineering part number E3TA-7550-ED should be shown on the part.
5.
Inspect the clutch disc contact surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate assembly for scoring, burn marks, or glazing conditions. Clean both
surfaces with a commercial alcohol base solvent and fine-grade of emery paper to be sure surfaces are clean.
6.
Install 1984 level clutch disc (LUK), pressure plate assembly (Valeo) overcenter assist spring (Black) and clutch housing to the engine (refer to
Light Truck Shop Manual - Section 16-24). The 1984 system utilizes a new high capacity 11" clutch and replaces the 12" 1983 clutch whenever
service is required.
7.
Check clutch housing alignment. Adjust if required as shown in Section 16-01 of the 1983-84 Light Truck Shop Manual.
8.
Install transmission. Fill transmission with specified lubricant (7.0 pints).
9.
Road test vehicle.
