YES -- System OK.
NO -- Replace damaged parts, add fluid and perform system brake bleeding procedures. Repeat test H1.
J1 - Verify Condition
^ Statically apply brake pedal.
^ Road test vehicle only if condition cannot be verified in shop.
^ Does brake pedal operate properly?
YES -- Vehicle OK.
NO -- Go to J2. See: J - Pedal Is Low or Feels Spongy/J2 - Brake Pedal Reserve Check
J2 - Brake Pedal Reserve Check
^ Key ON, engine running at idle with transmission in PARK or NEUTRAL.
^ Depress brake pedal lightly three or four times.
^ Wait 15 seconds to allow the vacuum to replenish.
^ Push down on brake pedal until it stops moving downward or an increased resistance to the pedal travel occurs.
NOTE: This increased resistance may feel like the pedal has bottomed out.
^ Hold the pedal in the applied position while increasing the engine speed to 2000 rpm.
^ Release the accelerator pedal.
^ Does the brake pedal move downward as engine speed returns to normal?
YES -- Go to J3. See: J - Pedal Is Low or Feels Spongy/J3 - Brake Fluid Level Check
NO -- Check vacuum to brake booster.
J3 - Brake Fluid Level Check
^ Check master cylinder brake fluid reservoir level.
^ Is fluid level within specifications?
YES -- Go to J4. See: J - Pedal Is Low or Feels Spongy/J4 - Filler Cap Vent Check
NO -- Check reservoir sealing points. Add fluid and perform system brake bleeding procedures.
J4 - Filler Cap Vent Check
^ Check if master cylinder filler cap vent holes are clogged or dirty.
^ Are holes clogged or dirty?
NO -- Go to J5. See: J - Pedal Is Low or Feels Spongy/J5 - Bleed Brake System
YES -- Clean as necessary. Repeat test J1. See: J - Pedal Is Low or Feels Spongy/J1 - Verify Condition
J5 - Bleed Brake System
^ Perform system brake bleeding procedures.
^ Is pedal still low, or does it still feel spongy?
YES -- Go to J6. See: J - Pedal Is Low or Feels Spongy/J6 - Front Wheel Bearing Adjustment
NO -- Vehicle OK.
