ISSUE:
The intake valve stem oil shields are no longer used on some diesel engine applications. The affected diesel engines and service parts are as
follows:
^
7.3L production engines with serial number 520429 and above
^
7.3L Service Cylinder Heads and Gasket Packages
^
6.9L Service Cylinder Heads and Gasket Packages.
Also the small nylon exhaust valve stem oil shields are no longer required on all 6.9L diesel engines. They are not packaged with the 6.9L Service
Cylinder Head Assemblies and Gasket Packages.
ACTION:
If service is required, do not install the small intake or exhaust valve stem oil shields as specified above. Refer to appropriate Light Truck
Shop Manual Section 22-08 for service details.
CAUTION:
DO NOT CONFUSE THE NYLON INTAKE VALVE STEM OIL SHIELD WITH THE RUBBER VALVE STEM SEAL. THE
RUBBER SEAL MUST REMAIN IN PLACE. REFER TO FIGURES 1 AND 2. THE EXHAUST VALVE IS EQUIPPED WITH A
LARGE (DEEP SKIRT) OIL SHIELD. NEVER INSTALL THE LARGE EXHAUST OIL SHIELD ON THE INTAKE VALVE
