POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION VALVE (PCV) - A valve which controls the flow of vapors from the crankcase into the engine.

PPM or ppm - Abbreviation for parts per million.

PRESSURE FEEDBACK EGR (PFE) SENSOR - Ceramic capacitance pressure sensor that signals EGR flow. If measures pressure in the chamber
below the EGR valve.

PROCESSOR - The "on-board" computer that receives data from a number of sensors and other electronic components. Based on input data information
programmed into the processor's memory, the processor generates output signals to control various engine functions.

Profile Ignition Pickup

PROFILE IGNITION PICKUP (PIP) - A "Hall Effect" Vane Switch sensor furnishes crankshaft position information to the processor. Replaces the 
crankshaft position sensor in EEC-IV applications.
PSOV - See "Canister Purge Shut Off Valve."

PULSE AIR SYSTEM - A type of exhaust emission control system which uses the natural exhaust pulses in a turned pipe. A reed-type check valve
responds to the negative pressure pulses and permits air to be drawn into the exhaust system.

Purge Control Valve

PURGE CONTROL VALVE (Purge CV) - Valve used to control the release of fuel vapors from the charcoal cannister into the engine.
PURGE SOLENOID - Device used to control the operation of the purge valve in evaporative control emission systems.

Q

QUICK TEST - A functional diagnostic test of the EEC system consisting of Key On/Engine Off, Engine Running and "continuous" tests and vehicle
preparation and hookup. Results are displayed as a series of service codes.

R

RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY (RAM) - Computer memory that is not part of the permanent memory of the computer.
RATIO METRIC - As used in EEC-A voltage divided by the reference voltage (VREF) multiplied by 10.

REED VALVE (Courier) - Check valve used on some engine applications. Prevents reverse flow of air from exhaust manifold to intake air cleaner.

REFERENCE VOLTAGE (VREF) - Power supplied by ECA to some sensors regulated at a specific voltage (8 to 10 volts EEC-1,2,3 and 4 to 6 volts
EEC-IV).

RELIEF VALVE - A pressure limiting valve located in the exhaust chamber of the thermactor air pump. It functions to relieve part of the exhaust airflow
if the pressure exceeds a calibrated value.

SELF-TEST - A part of the functional "Quick Test" diagnostic procedure which verifies that sensors and actuators are connected and operating properly.
Key On/Engine Off and Engine Running detect hard faults while the ongoing "continuous" test stores intermittent fuel for later retrieval.

SELF-TEST INPUT (STI) - The circuit in EEC systems which is used to initiate Self-Test. (In EEC-IV, Jumper Pin 5 of the Self-Test connector to the
single spaded gray connector.)
