IF REPAIRS WERE MADE AS A RESULT OF THE ABOVE TESTS, DRIVE THE TRUCK BEFORE GOING TO THE NEXT STEP.
3. Replace the fuel injection pump and set the timing according to FPS-8512-A or B. Refer to the 1988/89 Light Truck Shop Manual, Vol A, Section
22-08 for service details. Refer to the Parts Block for correct parts usage.
NOTE:
ONLY USE THE FUEL INJECTION PUMPS SHOWN IN THE PARTS BLOCK.
4. Record "Fuel Injection Pump replaced per TSB article 90-9-8 on both the warranty claim and the Engine Performance Chart comment line.
NOTE: WARRANTY CLAIMS FOR THE INJECTION PUMP WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED UNLESS ALL TAMPER RESISTANT SEALS ARE
INTACT AND THE COMPLETED ENGINE PERFORMANCE CHART IS SUBMITTED WITH THE RETURNED FUEL INJECTION
PUMP.

ISSUE:
Bucking and jerking, sometimes called "trailer hitching" during decel may be caused by the fuel injection pump. The fuel injection pump may
not maintain a constant flow of fuel to the injector nozzles. This concern is most noticeable while driving down a long downhill grade during
decel.
ACTION:
Use the following diagnostic procedure to determine if a new fuel injection pump is required.
Follow the ENGINE PERFORMANCE CHART - 7.3L - DIESEL ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE (FPS-8512-A or B). Complete the steps listed to
determine if replacement of the fuel pump is required. Make sure the truck is running acceptably before peforming this procedure.
