EXCESS STOCK RETURN

Excess stock returned for credit must have been purchased from Ford Customer Service Division in accordance with Policy Procedure Bulletin 4000.

Attachment III - Technical Information

OVERVIEW

Certain vehicle operating conditions can cause the catalyst substrate to crack or melt. This can cause symptoms including but not limited to audible noise
from the catalyst y-pipe and/or malfunction indicator lamp illumination.

INSPECTION

1. If there is an audible noise or rattle from the catalytic converters, replace the exhaust catalyst y-pipe and reprogram the Powertrain Control Module

(PCM). If there is no audible noise or rattle, proceed to step 2.

2. Connect the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) to the vehicle. Perform Self Test-Continuous or KOEO only and retrieve the DTCs.

If any of the following DTCs are present or pending, replace the exhaust catalyst y-pipe and reprogram the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold-Bank 1

-

P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold-Bank 2

If DTCs P0420 or P0430 are not present or pending, proceed with normal diagnostics.

CATALYST Y-PIPE REPLACE

Note:

It is critical that the tightening sequence called out in the Workshop Manual is followed to avoid exhaust leaks or vibration concerns following the
repair.

1. For the exhaust y-pipe removal service procedure, refer to the appropriate model year Workshop Manual, Section 309-00: Exhaust System.

2. Transfer both heated oxygen sensors (H02S) and both catalyst monitor sensors (CMS) from the old exhaust y-pipe to the new exhaust y-pipe. Refer

to the appropriate model year Workshop Manual, Section 303-14A: Electronic Engine Controls - Gasoline Engines.

3. For the exhaust y-pipe install service procedure, refer to the appropriate model year Workshop Manual, Section 309-00: Exhaust System.

MODULE REPROGRAMMING

NOTE:

Reprogramming concerns / errors may be caused by the following:

Data Link Connector (DLC) or Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) becoming disconnected.

^

Allowing the IDS to enter any type of sleep mode.

^

Using a wireless IDS to VCM connection.

^

Low voltage on the IDS lap top.

^

Low voltage in the vehicle battery (use of a battery charger is recommended).

If you encounter reprogramming concerns, DO NOT DELETE the session. If the original session has accidentally been deleted, recover the original
session from the IDS "TRASH CAN" (located in the lower right corner of the previous session screen) and continue to reprogram.

1. Make sure that all accessories (radio, interior fan, headlights, etc.) are switched off.

2. Verify that the IDS is updated to software release 69.02 or higher.

3. Connect the IDS to the vehicle and start a session.

4. Select the Tool Box tab and then select Module Programming. Touch the tick.

5. Select Module Reprogramming and then select PCM. Touch the tick.
