Clutch - Excessive Pedal Effort
Article No. 91-22-11

CLUTCH - EXCESSIVE PEDAL EFFORT - TRUCKS WITH 6.9L DIESEL OR 7.5L AND T-19 MANUAL TRANSMISSION
LIGHT TRUCK:
1984-87 F-250, F-350
ISSUE:
Excessive clutch pedal effort may be experienced when depressing the clutch pedal during shifting. Clutch pedal efforts greater than 70
pounds may be caused by binding of the release bearing due to contamination or lack of lubrication at the quill and bearing surfaces.
ACTION:
Check the clutch pedal effort and, if necessary, install a new bearing assembly which allows remote lubrication.
NOTE: EXCESSIVE PEDAL EFFORTS MAY ALSO BE CAUSED BY A WORN OUT CLUTCH DISC. THEREFORE, WHEN INSPECTING FOR
HIGH PEDAL EFFORTS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO DIAGNOSE AND CONFIRM THAT THE CONDITION IS CAUSED BY BINDING UP
OF THE RELEASE BEARING BEFORE TAKING CORRECTIVE ACTION.
The new bearing assembly will allow lubrication of the release bearing without removing the transmission and clutch housing. The bearing/tube
assembly is connected to a zerk type grease fitting with attaching hardware to allow remote lubrication.
Inspection Procedure
1.
Actuate the clutch pedal to confirm that the clutch pedal requires excessive effort.
2.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
3.
Remove the protective rubber boot from the opening in the clutch housing.
4.
Remove the slave cylinder from the vehicle.
5.
Move the release lever arm backward and forward by hand and look for binding of the release bearing.
6.
Remove the release lever arm by pulling the lever arm outward and look for evidence of the following conditions.
^
Excessive wear marks at the quill/bearing interface
^
Lack of lubrication at the quill/bearing interface
^
Contamination at the quill/bearing interface.
7.
If there is NO evidence of the above noted conditions at the quill and bearing surfaces, this service repair may not solve the concern.
8.
If there is evidence of the above noted conditions at the quill and bearing surfaces, proceed with the following release bearing replacement
procedure.
Release Bearing Replacement Procedure - Disassembly
1.
Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to the F-Series Light Truck Shop Manual, Section 16-24, for removal procedure.
2.
Remove the starter motor.
3.
Remove the clutch housing and the release bearing.
4.
Inspect the clutch pressure plate and disc for excessive wear.
Release Bearing Replacement Procedure Assembly
1.
Place the clutch housing on a workbench.
2.
Replace the transmission quill if it is worn or damaged.
3.
Make a hole in the clutch housing for the zerk fitting.
