CYLINDER HEAD GASKET - 7.3L DIESEL - SUSPECT COOLANT LEAK

Article No. 88-12-22
LIGHT TRUCK:

1988 E-SERIES, F-SERIES

This article is being republished in its entirety to notify service technicians that radiator hose-to-thermostat housing coolant leaks should not be
misdiagnosed as cylinder head gasket leaks.

ISSUE:

Coolant leaks from the upper radiator hose at the thermostat housing (water outlet elbow) may be mis-diagnosed as coolant leaking from the
cylinder head gasket. The coolant collects and follows the cylinder head gasket seam down the side of the engine and drops off when it
reaches the lower front corner of the crankcase.

ACTION:

To correct this, retighten the upper radiator hose clamp and check the cooling system to determine if further corrective action is required.
Refer to the following service procedure.

1.

Tighten the upper radiator hose clamp at the thermostat housing to 30 in.lbs. (3 N-m).

2.

Check to make sure the coolant leak has been corrected.

3.

If coolant leak is still present, check the thermostat housing gasket and replace the gasket if required.
