PERFORMANCE POOR - 7.3L DIESEL - SUPPLEMENTAL SERVICE DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES

ISSUE:
Additional Service Diagnostic Procedures have been developed for accurate diagnosis of poor performance concerns on the 7.3L diesel
engine.
ACTION:
To diagnose the cause of 7.3L diesel engine poor performance, use the following additional service procedures.
NOTE:
DO NOT USE THIS ARTICLE TO DIAGNOSE POOR PERFORMANCE ON 6.9L DIESEL ENGINES. REFER TO TSB 87-10-21
INSTEAD FOR 6.9L ENGINES. THIS ARTICLE ALSO DOES NOT COVER DIESEL ENGINES THAT HAVE BEEN MODIFIED BY
THE ADDITION OF AN AFTER-MARKET TURBOCHARGER. SUCH MODIFICATIONS REQUIRE TAMPERING WITH THE FUEL
INJECTION PUMP AND ARE NOT APPROVED OR WARRANTED BY FORD.

The information in this article is to be used as a supplement to the 1989 Engine/Emissions Diagnosis Shop Manual, Volume H, with the Engine
Performance Chart (Form FPS-8512-A) 7.3L (444 CID) Diesel Engine Diagnostic Guide. Proceed as follows:
1.
Complete step 1 of Form FPS-8512-A and record findings on the form. This includes corrections of any concerns found.
2.
Check accelerator linkage, Figure 1. The throttle lever MUST contact the full throttle stop when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed. If the full
throttle stop is not reached, or if the accelerator pedal interferes with the floor carpet/mat as the pedal is moved towards wide open throttle, correct
or eliminate the interference. The engine can't produce maximum power or RPM if full throttle is not achieved. Record the results in step 2 of
Form FPS-8512-A.
3.
Complete steps 3 through 7 of the 7.3L Diesel Engine Diagnostic Guide and record the findings on Form FPS-8512-A. This includes correction of
any concerns found in these steps.
