Pitman Arm: Service and Repair

Sector Shaft Arm 

Special Tool(s)

Removal and Installation 

NOTE: Install a new steering gear sector shaft arm if it is bent. If the steering gear sector shaft arm is bent, check the rest of the steering linkage for
damage. If steering linkage parts are damaged, install new as required. Do not attempt to straighten the steering gear sector shaft arm or any other
steering linkage components.

All vehicles 
1. Place the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. 

F250, F350, 4x4 and F450, F550 vehicles 

NOTE: To prevent the front suspension from shifting when the track bar is removed, the front suspension must be supporting the vehicle weight.

3. Position the Jack stand under the front axle assembly.
4. Lower the vehicle until the front suspension is supporting the vehicle weight.

All vehicles 
5. Remove the cotter pin, retainer cap and the drag link-to-sector shaft arm nut.

Discard the cotter pin.

To install, tighten to 200 Nm (148 ft. lbs.).

6. Using the special tool, separate the drag link from the sector shaft arm.

F250, F350, 4x4 and F450, F550 vehicles 
7. Remove the 2 track bar bracket-to-frame bolts.

To install, tighten to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).

8. Remove the 3 track bar bracket-to-frame nuts and position the track bar aside.

To install, tighten to 175 Nm (129 ft. lbs.).
