Camshaft Position Sensor: Testing and Inspection
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Test
Purpose
The purpose of this test is to verify the CMP sensor is operating correctly. A damaged CMP sensor may cause a no start engine stall or a CMP
diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Recommended Procedure
CAUTION: To prevent the CMP sensor tester cable from contacting moving parts on the front end accessory drive (FEAD) as the engine is cranked
over during testing, secure the CMP sensor tester cable along the front side of the engine. Route the cable behind any bracket, crossmember or other
fixed component towards the front of the engine to the CMP sensor.
1. Disconnect the CMP sensor.
2. Connect the CMP sensor tester harness connector to the CMP sensor.
3. Connect the CMP sensor tester to a 12-volt power source. The red 12-Volt LED should illuminate.
4. Turn the VREF voltage on. The red VREF LED should illuminate.
5. Crank the engine while monitoring the green CMP Signal LED.

If the green CMP Signal LED flashes on and off at a rapid rate the CMP sensor is OK.
CAUTION:If evidence of physical damage is present, determine the cause of the damage before installing a new CMP sensor.

If the green CMP Signal LED remains steadily on or of install a new CMP sensor. For additional information refer to Electronic Engine
Controls. Visually inspect the CMP sensor for scratches indicating trigger wheel contact or missing epoxy from the small holes on the end of
the sensor. If damage is present determine the cause before installing a new CMP sensor.
