Principles of Operation
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The display center (base cluster) and the message center (RPO cluster) is a vacuum fluorescent display and part of the instrument cluster. The message
center electronic functions use both hardwired, and controller area network (CAN) circuitry to transmit and receive information. As a technician, it is
very important to understand:
-
where the input (command) originates.
-
all the information (messages) necessary in order for a feature to operate.
-
which module(s) receive(s) the input or command message.
-
is the module which received the input (message) control the output of the feature, or does it output a message over the CAN to another module.
-
which module controls the output of the feature.
The message center provides the following features:
-
information displays
-
setup displays
-
warning messages
-
system check messages
The message center information can be selected through a set of 3 buttons:
-
INFO
-
SETUP
-
RESET
Information Displays
The information displays are non-timed modes. The selected mode remains on until the driver presses a message center button to change the mode or
it is overridden by another mode. The information display modes are:
-
odometer/compass
-
trip odometer/odometer/compass
-
distance to empty/odometer/compass
-
average fuel economy/odometer/compass
-
engine hour meter/odometer/compass
Setup Displays
The setup displays are timed modes and terminate after a finite interval. The setup display modes are:
-
system check
-
English/metric units
-
autolock
-
autolamp delay
-

System Warnings
System warnings alert the driver to possible problems or malfunctions in the vehicle's operating system. In the event of a multiple warning situation,
the message center cycles the display to show all warnings by displaying each one for 4 seconds. The warning messages that have been reset are
divided into 3 categories:
-
the messages do not disappear until a condition is changed.
-
the messages appear on the display 10 minutes from the reset.
-
the messages do not reappear until the ignition switch is cycled from the OFF position to the ON position.
The warning messages that do not disappear until the condition is changed are:
-
REDUCED ENGINE POWER
-
STOP ENGINE SAFELY
The messages that appear on the display for 10 minutes are:
-
LOW FUEL LEVEL
-
CHECK GAUGES (base)
-
CHECK TRAILER (base)
-
LOW BRAKE FLUID LEVEL
-
LOW OIL PRESSURE
-
CHECK ENGINE TEMPERATURE
-
TRAILER DISCONNECTED
-
WATER IN FUEL (diesel only)
-
CHECK AIR FILTER (diesel only)
