Steering Gear: Description and Operation

    A pinion gear, machined on the input shaft, engages the rack. Rotation of the input shaft pinion causes the rack to move laterally. The gear input shaft
is connected to the steering shaft by a U-joint shaft and flexible coupling on all models except Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz. Escort, EXP,
Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz use a double U-joint shaft to connect the gear input shaft to the steering shaft. Tie rods are attached to each end of the
rack joint, allowing the tie rods to move with the action of the front suspension.
    The gear is sealed at both ends with rubber bellows. For lubrication,  Fairmont and Zephyr, Mustang and Capri, Mustang SVO, 1982 Cougar and
Granada, 1983 LTD and Marquis, use 5 oz. of D8AZ-19578-A type fluid grease or equivalent. 1982-85 Escort, EXP, Lynx, LN7, Tempo and Topaz
models use 3.2 oz.  Checking or refilling is not necessary unless fluid leakage has occurred or repair is necessary.
    On 1982-83 Fairmont and Zephyr, 1982-85 Capri and Mustang, 1984-85 Mustang SVO, 1982 Cougar and Granada, 1983 LTD and Marquis, the ball
housings and tie rods are not adjustable for preload and feature a torquing and pinning procedure. 1982-85 Escort, EXP, Lynx and LN7, 1984-85 Tempo
and Topaz incorporate a simple tightening screw attachment procedure.
    With the steering gear in proper adjustment and front suspension and linkage in good condition, there should be no more than {3/8} inch freeplay
measured at the rim of the steering wheel.
    When front wheels are off the ground, do not turn steering wheel quickly or forcefully from stop to stop as this will build-up hydraulic pressure within
the gear, which in turn could damage or force off the bellows.
    When turning steering wheel from stop to stop with vehicle stationary, there should be no knock produced by the steering gear. If a knock is produced,
adjustment of rack preload and pinion bearing should be checked. A faint knock produced while driving on an extremely rough road is acceptable.
