TRANSAXLE - MTX - GEAR "WHINE"
FORD:
1988-90 FESTIVA
ISSUE:
A "whining" noise heard at speeds above 40 MPH (64 kmH) may be caused by worn gears inside the transaxle. The wear condition results in
a "ring and pinion" type noise or whine.
ACTION:
Install a new final drive input gear and output shaft. Also install a fifth speed driven gear in 5 speed MTX applications. The new parts are
made from improved material to resist wear. Refer to the following parts application chart for the correct service part numbers.
1.
Test drive the vehicle to check for transaxle gear noise. The level of the whine should change between the following conditions:
^
acceleration
^
deceleration
^
cruising
2.
Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. Refer to the Festiva Shop Manual, Section 16 for service details.
3.
Install a new input gear and output shaft. Also install a new fifth speed driven gear on MTX 5 speed applications. It is important that the
procedures outlined in the Festiva Shop Manual, Section 16-41 are followed completely to prevent a repeat repair.
4.
Re-install the transaxle into the vehicle.
