Exterior Door Handle - Breaks Off In Freezing Weather

HANDLE - DOOR EXTERIOR - BREAKS OFF - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 8/14/88

ISSUE:

An exterior door handle that breaks off in freezing weather may be caused by the door weatherstrip sticking to the body sheet metal. When
the weatherstrip sticks to the sheet metal, excessive force is applied to the door handle which results in a broken handle.

ACTION:

Install a new design exterior door handle with additional reinforcement around the door handle pivot area. Also apply silicone spray on the
door weatherstrips to guard against a sticking condition. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1.

Clean the door weatherstrips.

2.

Apply Ford silicone lubricant, (C0AZ-19553-AA) onto a clean shop cloth.

3.

Wipe the door weatherstrips with the silicone treated cloth.

4.

Remove the door trim panel and weathershield.

5.

Remove the nut from the handle that holds the lock linkage rod to the exterior door handle, Figure 1.

6.

Remove the two (2) stud nuts from the handle that holds the exterior door handle to the door.

7.

Remove the outer door handle.

8.

Position the outer door handle to the door.

9.

Install the two (2) stud nuts on the handle to hold the exterior door handle to the door.

10.

Install the nut on the handle that holds the lock linkage rod to the exterior door handle, Figure 1.

11.

Install the door weathershield and trim panel.
