This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to expand the model year coverage to include 1990 units built before 1/20/90 and correct the
reimbursement allowance.

ISSUE:

Rear brakes that "squeal" during light brake applications at low speeds when the brakes are cold may be caused by a vibration or resonance
of the rear brake backing plates.

ACTION:

Install two (2) new rear brake backing plates that have been reinforced to prevent vibration. Refer to the following procedure for service
details.

1.

Remove the rear brake drum and bearing hub assemblies. Refer to the Festiva Shop Manual, Section 11-15 for service
details.

2.

Remove the rear brake shoes. Refer to the Festiva Shop Manual, Section 12-02 for service details.

3.

Remove the (4) four nuts from the back of each brake assembly to release the backing plates and wheel spindle supports.
Refer to the Festiva Shop Manual, Section 14-32 for service details.

4.

Throw away the old backing plate assemblies.

5.

Install the two (2) new reinforced rear brake backing plate assemblies. Tighten the retaining nuts to 32-45 lb.ft. (43-61 N-m).

6.

Reinstall the rear brake shoes. Refer to the Festiva Shop Manual, Section 12-02 for service details.

CAUTION:

ALWAYS INSTALL NEW SPINDLE NUTS WHEN THE BRAKE DRUMS ARE REMOVED.

7.

Reinstall the brake drum and bearing hub assemblies. Refer to the Festiva Shop Manual, Section 11-15 for service details.
