ISSUE:
A "chirping" or "squeaking" noise from the engine timing belt may be caused by the shape of the one piece timing belt guide plate. Too
much of the timing belt can contact the timing belt guide plate and result in a noise concern.
ACTION:
Install a new two piece timing belt guide plate that will reduce the contact area of the timing belt. Refer to the following procedure for
service details.
1.
Remove the top timing belt cover from the engine. Refer to the Tracer Shop Manual, Section 21-05-13 or the Festiva Shop Manual Section
21-05-19 for service details.

2.
Pour a small amount of water on the front edge of the timing belt, Figure 1.
NOTE:
DO NOT USE OIL, GREASE OR ANY OTHER TYPE OF LUBRICANT. ANYTHING OTHER THAN WATER COULD DAMAGE THE
TIMING BELT.
3.
Start the engine and listen for the noise. If the noise is gone, proceed to Step 4. If the noise is still present, refer to the Tracer or Festiva Shop
Manual, Section 21-05 for normal diagnostics.
4.
Remove the lower timing belt cover.
5.
Remove the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft.
6.
Remove the existing one piece guide plate from the crankshaft.
