Exhaust System - Sulfur Smell

EXHAUST - SULFUR SMELL 1.3L - CARBURATED

This modification is authorized only for the listed engines. Performing this modification on other engine calibrations is unauthorized and
could create liability under applicable federal or local laws.

ISSUE:

An objectional exhaust sulfur smell may be experienced during various driving conditions. This may be caused by fuel quality, sulfur
content in the fuel and certain engine characteristics. The affected units are 1988 and 1989 carbureted Festivas.

ACTION:

Adjust the carburetor idle mixture to reduce the "CO" concentration in the exhaust.

1.

Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.

2.

Turn off the engine and remove the upstream pulse air hose from the air cleaner reed valve assembly.

3.

Insert the exhaust gas analyzer probe into the upstream pulse air hose and wrap the area with a shop towel to prevent air leakage into the hose.

NOTE:

AIR LEAKAGE INTO THE PULSE AIR HOSE WILL RESULT IN AN IMPROPER "CO" READING.

4.

Start the engine and turn off all the accessories.

5.

Check and set the ignition timing and engine idle speed. Refer to the VECI decal for the correct specifications.

6.

With the engine cooling fan off, perform the "CO" test.

NOTE:

IF THE COOLING FAN TURNS ON DURING THE "CO" TEST WAIT FOR THE FAN TO STOP BEFORE CONTINUING.

7.

Let the "CO" reading stabilize. If the reading is between 0.5% and 1.5% discontinue this procedure and refer to the Festiva Shop Manual, Section
55-06-51, to diagnose the pulse air system. If the reading is NOT between 0.5% and 1.5% proceed to Step 8.

8.

Remove the carburetor.

9.

Remove the tamper resistant cap that covers the idle mixture screw.

10.

Clean the gasket mating surfaces and install a new carburetor gasket, (E7GZ-9C477-A).

11.

Reinstall the carburetor.

12.

Warm the engine to normal operating temperature.

13.

Adjust the idle "CO" concentration to 0.5%.

NOTE:

IF THE IDLE "CO" CONCENTRATION CANNOT BE SET TO 0.5%, THE FEEDBACK CARBURETOR ACTUATOR (FBCA)
OPERATION SHOULD BE CHECKED. REFER TO THE 1988/89 FESTIVA SHOP MANUAL, SECTION 55-04-99.

14.

Adjust the base idle speed to 700-750 RPM.

15.

Install a new tamper resistant cap, (E8BZ-9J500-A).

16.

Remove the exhaust gas analyzer probe from the upstream pulse air hose and reinstall the hose to the air cleaner reed valve assembly.

17.

Test drive the vehicle to make sure idle qualities and driveability are okay.
