Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair
Wheel Bearings & Seal
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove rear wheel.
2.
Remove brake drum as follows:
a. Remove grease cap, then pry upward on staked portion of locknut using suitable tool.
b. Remove and discard locknut. The locknut on the right side of the vehicle has lefthand threads. Turn locknut clockwise to remove.
c. Remove washer, outer wheel bearing and brake drum from spindle.

Pry seal from drum using suitable tool, then remove inner wheel bearing from drum.
4.
Clean bearings with suitable solvent and inspect for scoring, pitting or heat damage. Replace bearings as necessary.
5.
Pack bearings and hub area with suitable grease, then install inner wheel bearing.
6.
Lubricate new seal, then install into drum using suitable driver.
7.
Install drum, outer wheel bearing, washer and locknut.
8.
Adjust wheel bearing preload as outlined under ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES/WHEEL BEARINGS.
9.
Install grease cap and rear wheel, then lower vehicle.
