NOTE:Follow the steps below precisely. NOTE:Operation applies only to vehicles fitted with the 1.7-Zetec-S-VCT engine. Dismantling of the crank assembly is not permitted on vehicles fitted with the 1.4-Zetec-SE engine. Standard preparatory measures - Using a length of Plastigage , measure each bearing individually.
- Only the big-end bearing cap of the bearing being measured is installed and tightened to the specified torque.
- The big-end bearing shells and journals must be free of engine oil and dirt.
- The place of measurement should be near the dead centre position.
| | -
Lay the Plastigage in position. - Detach the corresponding big-end bearing cap.
- Insert the corresponding big-end bearing shells into the cylinder block, free of oil.
- Place a Plastigage strip, which should be equal to the width of the bearing, on the bearing journal.
| | -
Perform the measurement - Install the big-end bearing cap with the corresponding big-end bearing shells.
- Detach the big-end bearing cap again.
| | -
Read off the measurement. - Compare the length of Plastigage with the Plastigage scale.
- The value that is read off is the bearing clearance.
