Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems - Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems Fiesta 1996 (08/1995-02/2002)
Description and Operation

Vehicle built up to 01/1999

The passenger compartment doors are of a conventional lock to striker plate design with the strikers located on the body pillars.

The tailgate also utilises a conventional lock to striker plate design, with the striker located centrally on the edge of the load space floor.

The door locks are operated by a conventional actuating rod system connected to the lock barrels and outer handles, combined with a cable release to the interior remote control levers.

These are supplemented by locking motors. The power motors for the central and double locking mechanisms are mounted directly onto the individual lock assemblies, and are operated via sensors in the motor. The locks and key barrels also incorporate the door ajar and alarm set/reset switches where these systems are fitted.

All the lock mechanisms are shielded to make theft or interference much more difficult.

The interior door handles have a single lever to lock/unlock or open the doors from the interior (there are no separate locking buttons or levers) and when the doors are `dead locked' these are rendered inoperative. This makes it impossible for a would be thief to gain entry by breaking a window and opening the doors using the interior door handles.

A lock may be overhauled using the lockset service kit. The lockset service kit consists of a lock housing, tumbler magazine, tumbler set, barrel return spring and the appropriate operating levers.

A service test mode enables faults to be easily traced, refer to the Diagnosis and Testing procedure. For vehicles built up to: 01/1999. For additional information, refer to Section  419-01A Anti-Theft - Active / 419-01B Anti-Theft - Passive.

The infrared remote control transmitter initiates the following functions:

  • Lock/unlock the central locking system.
  • Activate/deactivate the double locking.
  • Interior lights on command (when unlocking) to the central timer module (CTM).
  • Arms/disarms the anti-theft alarm system.
  • Deactivates a triggered alarm.

Additional alarm system information is available. For additional information, refer to Section  419-01A Anti-Theft - Active / 419-01B Anti-Theft - Passive.For additional information, refer to Section  419-01A Anti-Theft - Active / 419-01B Anti-Theft - Passive.

Remote Control System

The remote control system is completely independent in function but fully integrated within the anti-theft alarm/double locking control module. The remote control system consists of a small infrared transmitter housed within the ignition key and remote control sensor.

The remote control transmitter contains two push buttons (lock/unlock) to operate the system:

} (pressed once only). Deactivates the central locking, double locking, anti-theft alarm.

{{ (pressed once only). Activates the central locking and the anti-theft alarm system.

{{ (pressed twice within three seconds). Activates the central locking, double locking and the anti-theft alarm.

Being an infrared operated system, the remote control transmitter must be aimed at the remote control sensor during operation and has a maximum range of five meters under normal operating conditions.

Before the remote control system can be used, each transmitter must be initialized to the vehicle. A maximum number of four transmitters can be initialized to any system. All new remote control transmitters must be initialized at the same time.

Double Locking

For the removal and installation of the double locking module. For additional information, refer to Section  419-10 Multifunction Electronic Modules.

Double locking prevents the interior door lock levers from unlocking the vehicle. Double locking is activated by turning the key in either the driver or front passenger door firstly to the unlock position and secondly to the lock position within three seconds or by operating the remote control.

Successful double locking activation is acknowledged by all of the direction indicators and the indicator LED (housed within the clock assembly) flashing twice.

Double locking will be inhibited if the control module senses a door is open. The anti-theft alarm/double locking control module receives this input via the central timer control module, which receives its input from a door ajar switch.

If the vehicle battery becomes discharged after the double locking is activated, opening a front door with a key will mechanically deactivate the double locking (on that door only).

Inputs and Outputs

The anti-theft alarm control module receives inputs from the following components for electronic door lock operation:

  • Remote control transmitter through the remote control receiver sensor.
  • Door ajar switches.
  • Hood switch.
  • Anti-theft alarm inhibit switch.
  • Ignition switch (positions I and II).

The module sends outputs to the following for electronic door lock operation.

  • Direction indicators.
  • Central locking actuators (remote control only).
  • Double locking actuators.
  • Luggage compartment lock actuator.
  • Indicator LED.
  • Interior lights on command (when unlocking) to the CTM.

The keyless entry remote transmitter operates the following functions:

  • Unlocking/locking the driver and passenger door(s).
  • Unlocking/locking the liftgate.
  • Activate/deactivate the double locking.
  • Arms/disarms the anti-theft alarm system.
  • Deactivates a triggered alarm.

Additional anti-theft alarm system information is available. For additional information, refer to Section  419-01A Anti-Theft - Active / 419-01B Anti-Theft - Passive.

Inputs and Outputs

The keyless entry/computer operated lock system receives inputs from the following:

  • Ignition switch (positions l and ll).
  • Door ajar switches.
  • Hood switch.
  • Liftgate switch.
  • Keyless entry remote transmitter.

The keyless entry/computer operated lock system distributes outputs to the following:

  • Central timer module (CTM) (interior lighting).
  • Door lock actuators.
  • Double locking motors.
  • Liftgate release actuator.
  • Indicator LED.
  • Turn signal lamps.

Transmitter, Keyless Entry Remote

The keyless entry/computer operated lock system is completely independent in function but fully integrated within the anti-theft alarm/double locking control module. The remote control system consists of a transmitter and an antenna.

The remote control transmitter for the radio frequency system will operate without the transmitter being directed at the vehicle. The normal range between transmitter and antenna will be 10 meters.

Before the remote control system can be used, each transmitter must be initialized to the vehicle. A maximum number of four transmitters can be initialized to any system. All remote control transmitters must be initialized at the same time.

The keyless entry/computer operated locks will not operate with the ignition switch in position II.

Locking/Unlocking

The remote control transmitter housed within the ignition key contains three push buttons (lock, unlock and liftgate release) to operate the system.

Lock button (pressed once only) activates the central locking and the anti-theft alarm system.

Lock button (pressed twice within three seconds) activates the central locking, doublelocking and anti-theft alarm.

Unlock button (pressed once only) deactivates the central locking double locking and anti-theft alarm.

Double Locking

Double locking prevents the interior door handles from unlocking the vehicle.

Double locking is activated by turning the key in either the driver's or the front passenger's door firstly to the unlock position and secondly to the lock position within three seconds or by operating the remote control.

Successful double locking activation is acknowledged by all of the direction indicators and the indicator LED flashing twice.

Double locking will be inhibited if the control module senses a door is open. The GEM receives this input via the CTM, which receives its input from a door ajar switch.

If the vehicle battery becomes discharged after the double locking is activated, opening a front door with a key will mechanically deactivate the double locking (only on that door).
