MERCURY:
2006 Montego
ISSUE
Some 2006 Freestyle, Five Hundred, and Montego vehicles may exhibit an intermittent air bag light on with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B2290 /
lamp fault code 16 in restraints control module (RCM) that is difficult to duplicate.
ACTION
Use the following Service Procedure to correct the DTC B2290.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Reprogram the RCM with updated software if the vehicle exhibits all of the following conditions:
^
DTC is difficult / impossible to reproduce
^
RCM has continuous DTC B2290
^
Bit-mapped PID (flagged faults) information points to Occupant Classification Sensor (OCS) system with an internal fault
^
DTC is not present during on-demand test
NOTE
IF DTC B2290 IS PRESENT UNDER OTHER CONDITIONS, PROCEED WITH NORMAL DIAGNOSIS.
2.
Reprogram the RCM to the latest calibration using IDS release IDS 45.4 and higher with patch 1. This new calibration is not included in the VCM
2006.9 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 418-01 to reprogram the RCM.
3.
If the RCM already has been reprogrammed and the OCS internal fault still exists, replace the OCS. Refer to WSM Section 501-20B.
WARNING
BE SURE TO FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS INDICATED IN THE WSM PROCEDURES IN SECTION 501-20B.
NOTE
IF OCS IS REPLACED, A NEW HEATED SEAT ELEMENT NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED (IF EQUIPPED).
NOTE
IF THERE IS MORE THAN ONE FAULT, CORRECT OTHER FAULTS NOT RELATED TO OCS INTERNAL FAULT.
