ISSUE
Some 2005-2006 Freestyle/Five Hundred/Montego vehicles may exhibit an intermittent malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble
code (DTC) P0460 for fuel level sensor circuit. This code may be set by two (2) refueling habits:

Multiple refuelings with relatively small amounts of fuel
^
Refueling beyond the nozzle automatic shut off level. To prevent P0460 due to refueling habits, it is recommended that a minimum of five (5) gallons
are purchased and allow no more than two (2) automatic pump click-off
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Check powertrain control module (PCM) and Instrument Cluster for DTCs P2067, P2068, B1202, B1204, B2627 and/or B2628.
a.
If these DTCs are present with P0460, or if gauge concerns are noted, refer to TSB 06-17-2 and/or follow Pin Point Test B in Workshop
Manual (WSM), Section 413-01 for diagnosis.
b.
For P0460 with no gauge related concerns, reprogram the PCM for revised software to reduce possibility of setting a false code. P0460 is
intended to set when this vehicle is driven approximately 120 miles (193 km) and fuel gauge indication has not dropped more than 3% in
that distance indicating a possible stuck float.
2.
Reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration using IDS release B43.18 and higher or B44.10 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the
VCM 2006.7 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.
