SQUEAK/RATTLE FROM DASH AREA - BUILT ON OR 
BEFORE 11/5/2010

2009-2011 Flex

ISSUE
Some 2009-2011 Ford Flex vehicles built on or before 11/5/2010 may experience a squeak/rattle from the dash area while driving. This may be due to
the defroster grill making contact with the dash in the area of the vehicle identification number (VIN) opening.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Check for the noise coming from the defroster grill.

a. If the noise has been identified as coming from the defroster grill, proceed to Step 2.

b. If the noise is not coming from the defroster grill do not continue with this article. Refer to Work Shop Manual (WSM), Section 100-04 for

normal diagnostics.

2. Remove A-Pillar trim panels from the left and right side of the vehicle. Refer to WSM, Section 501-05.

3. Remove the defroster grill, carefully lifting upward by hand starting at left and right side of the dash, then work across the remainder of the dash to

release the first row of retaining clips. To release the remaining retaining clips closest to the windshield, use an extended length door/trim panel clip
removal tool like Snap-on tool number ASG187BR or equivalent, starting again at the left and right side of the dash.

a. It is recommended to place a clean shop towel on the dash pad when using the tool to prevent damaging the dash pad.

4. Place defroster grill on flat clean surface with retaining clip side facing upward.

5. Inspect the defroster grill area around the VIN plate opening and retaining clip locations shown by the arrows for existing flock tape. (Figure 1)

a. If flock tape is present in these areas, the tape must be carefully removed, be sure not to damage the defroster grill.

6. The surfaces called out in Step 5 must be cleaned with a 50/50 mixture of water and denatured alcohol.

7. Install the three pieces of foam tape from the kit in the VIN plate opening and the two pieces of flock tape from the kit at the retaining clip locations

shown by the arrows. (Figure 1)

8. Reinstall defrost grill panel.
