Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Removal

  1. Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount retaining nuts by five turns.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

  1. Detach the brake hose support bracket and stabilizer bar connecting link from the strut and spring assembly.

  1. Remove the brake caliper retaining bolts.
    1. Remove the bolt covers.
    1. Remove the bolts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Suspend the brake caliper to prevent load being placed on the brake hose.
    Detach the brake caliper from the wheel knuckle.
    1. Rotate the retaining spring.
    1. Detach and suspend the brake caliper.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Loosen the tie-rod end retaining nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Using the special tool, detach the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
    • Discard the tie-rod end retaining nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the lower arm ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Detach the lower arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    1. Remove the pinch bolt.
    1. Detach the lower arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    • Remove the heat shield.

  1. Remove the wheel knuckle pinch bolt.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Using the special tool, detach the wheel knuckle from the strut and spring assembly.
    1. Insert the special tool and rotate through 90 degrees.
    1. Detach the wheel knuckle from the strut and spring assembly.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:With the aid of another technician, support the strut and spring assembly.
    Remove the strut and spring assembly top mount retaining nuts.
  1. Remove the strut and spring assembly.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not fully tighten the strut and spring assembly retaining nuts at this stage.
    With the aid of another technician, install the strut and spring assembly top mount retaining nuts.

  1. Attach the wheel knuckle to the strut and spring assembly.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the heat shield is installed to prevent damage to the ball joint.
    Attach the lower arm ball joint to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Attach the brake caliper to the wheel knuckle.
    1. Install the bolts.
    1. Install the bolt covers.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new tie-rod end retaining nut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Attach the tie-rod end to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Attach the brake hose support bracket and stabilizer bar connecting link to the strut and spring assembly.
  1. Install the wheel and tire.

  1. Tighten the strut and spring assembly top mount retaining nuts.
  1. Check the front wheel alignment.
