Parking Brake and Actuation - Parking Brake Cable Focus 1999 (08/1998-12/2004)
Removal and Installation

Removal

All vehicles
  1. Remove the floor console. For additional information, refer to Section  501-12 Instrument Panel and Console.
  1. Release the parking brake.

  1. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment nut to the end of the thread.
    1. Remove the retaining clip.
    1. Loosen the adjustment nut.
  1. Remove the rear wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the exhaust pipe.
    Detach the exhaust tailpipe and muffler assembly.
    1. Remove and discard the nuts.
    1. Unhook the hanger insulators.

  1. Detach the center hanger insulator.

  1. Remove the exhaust center heat shield.

  1. Detach the exhaust rear heat shield from the floor panel.

  1. Detach the parking brake cables from the equalizer.
    • Turn the cable through 90 degrees.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:There are marks and sleeves on the cable outer to indicate the clip locations. Note the position of the clips on the outer cable to aid installation.
    Detach the rear cable from the retaining clips on both sides (right-hand side shown).

  1. Remove the air deflector on both sides (if equipped).
    1. Remove the screws.
    1. Release the clip.

  1. Detach the cable guides from the floor panel.

  1. Detach the outer cables from the bracket.
Vehicles with anti-lock brakes

  1. Disconnect the rear wheel speed sensors.
Vehicles with rear drum brakes

  1. Remove the brake drum and wheel hub assemblies.

  1. Detach the parking brake cable guide from the tie bar on both sides.

  1. Disconnect the parking brake cables.
  1. Pull the parking brake cable and guide through the tie bar on both sides.

  1. Remove the parking brake connecting cable on both sides.
    1. Release the actuating lever.
    1. Detach the cable.
    1. Depress the clip.
Vehicles with rear disc brakes

  1. Detach the parking brake cable from the tie bar on both sides.

  1. Detach the parking brake cable from the caliper on both sides.
    1. Pull back the parking brake lever.
    1. Disconnect the cable from the parking brake lever.
    1. Remove the conduit retaining clip.
    1. Disconnect the cable and conduit.
All vehicles
  1. Remove the parking brake cables.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The left-hand cable can be identified by a white sleeve and the right-hand cable by a black sleeve.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Check the exhaust hanger insulators for damage and fatigue. Install new exhaust hanger insulators as required, using a suitable lubricant.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new exhaust tailpipe and muffler assembly nuts.
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Adjust the parking brake.
    For additional information, refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjustment in this section.
